B-B-E wrestlers compete at Section 5A tournament

The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa wrestling team sent 12 athletes to the Section 5A individual wrestling tournament at Yellow Medicine East high school on Saturday, February 22. Out of those 12, three of them earned first or second place finishes to advance to the Class 1A state tournament at Xcel Energy Center on February 28 and March 1. They are Noah Jensen (107 pounds), Brett DeRoo (160), Carson Gilbert (215) and Hunter Laage (285). Results are as follows by weight division.

107: Noah Jensen placed second and advanced to the state tournament; he has a 34-7 record this season.

114: Noah Welte placed third. In his semifinal match, Welte lost a terrific battle by a 7-4 decision to No. 2-seeded Jamison Meagher of Paynesville Area.

121: Noah DeRoo placed third; in a true second place match, he lost a 23-6 tech fall (5:21) to Paynesville Area sophomore Roman Roberg.

127: Jace Mueller placed fifth. In his quarterfinal match against sophomore Blake Mead of Minneota, Jace lost by a 6-4 decision. Later, in the third place match, Jace won by fall (5:33) against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City's Nolan Bierwerth.

133: Dylan Koob won by fall (3:43) in a wrestle-in round match before losing in the quarterfinals and then in wrestlebacks.

139: McCoy Detloff went 0-2.

145: Louie Tensen lost his quarterfinal match before winning his wrestleback opener and then finishing in sixth place.

152: Andrew Spanier placed sixth.

160: Brett DeRoo placed first and advanced to the state tournament. After a first-round bye, Brett won by fall (1:16) in the semifinals against Paynesville Area's Mitchel Blonigen. In the championship, Brett won a 10-0 major decision against Canby's Blake Giese.

172: Ethan Mueller went 2-2 and placed fourth.

189: open.

215: Carson Gilbert placed first and advanced to the state tournament.

285: Hunter Laage placed first and advanced to the state tournament. He has a 30-8 record so far this season.
