On Thursday, February 13 in Washington, D.C., U.S. Senator Rand Paul provided examples of wasteful spending during a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing titled "Waste by the Foreign Aid Bureaucracy." The attached video features Senator Paul speaking during this committee hearing.
Senator Paul said, "The U.S. should not be the world's sugar daddy, especially towards countries and organizations who act contrary to our nation's beliefs. Our country is 36 trillion dollars in debt, yet we continue to send billions of dollars overseas."
Paul noted his belief that the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) are some of the worst offenders in this area.
Examples of USAID fraud and waste provided by Senator Paul:
1. To Ukraine's public affairs office, USAID sent $4.8 million to "social media influences" in Kiev.
2. To Paraguay, USAID sent $2.1 million to enhance that country's border security.
3. USAID funded women-led Ukrainian fashion designers to the Paris Fashion Show.
4. USAID spent $2 million on transgender surgeries, hormone therapies and gender-affirming care in Guatemala.
5. The State Department spent $3 million on "Girl-centered climate action" in Brazil.
