U of M alumni enjoy gathering at Redhead Creamery

The Redhead Creamery, located between Brooten and Padua, hosted a University of Minnesota Brooten Alumni and Legislative Social on Saturday. The purpose was to help connect area alumni with state legislators, and it also doubled as a way to show support for Redhead Creamery, which is owned by U of M alumni Lucas and Alise Sjostrom.

The University of Minnesota, across all campuses, has over 633,000 alumni spread across the state, nation and globe. Of those alumni, 62 percent have remained or have set down roots in Minnesota.

In terms of Big 10 schools, this rates as a tie for first place for keeping alumni in the state.

Lisa Lewis, CEO and president of the U of M's Alumni Association, presented this information while praising Redhead Creamery and its owners, Lucas and Alise Sjostrom.

"We are so proud of what you've done here. You epitomize what the University stands for: you got your degrees, and now you're doing something important for our state," said Lewis.

"Just as importantly, you are using the research at the U and the system."

Speaking to the crowd, Lewis said, "Each of you has a story. As we have conversations with the Legislature, it's important that you reach out and tell them your University story and the impact it's had in your life."

"Your voice in that conversation matters."

Following Lewis's comments, U of M-Morris Chancellor Janet Schrunk Ericksen spoke about her campus and its programming. Representative Paul Anderson of Starbuck and State Senator Torrey Westrom of Alexandria then provided comments about the upcoming legislative session, which began on Tuesday this week.

Additional coverage was published in the January 16 issue of the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper.
