Suzanne Sagedahl, age 68 of Brooten died Sunday, January 5, 2025 at home surrounded by her family and friends under the care of hospice. A memorial service celebrating Suzanne’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. After the service the celebration will continue at the Ka-De-Shack in Brooten. Suzanne’s wishes were for those attending the service to wear their favorite Minnesota sports team attire. Inurnment will be at a later date in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Brooten. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten.
Suzanne Kay Sagedahl was born in Glenwood, Minnesota, on February 9, 1956, to loving parents Cornell and Opal Sagedahl. Suzanne was the youngest of eight siblings. Suzanne was a pioneer in women’s sports and a steadfast supporter of her community. She grew up in Brooten and was a proud member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Her high school years were marked by her outstanding performance on the 1973 undefeated girls’ basketball team, which claimed the title of District 20 Champions. Suzy’s passion for sports continued as she pursued her education, graduating from Brooten High School in 1974. She furthered her studies at Willmar Community College and Moorhead State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. She was a trailblazer for women’s sports at Brooten High School and was inducted into the Moorhead State University Sports Hall of Fame, an honor that recognized her contributions and achievements.
Suzanne’s professional life was as diverse as her interests. She worked a the manager at the mini mart in Fargo, North Dakota, and Aurora, Colorado, and later at Bayer Auto, Inc. in Elrosa. Her career also included positions at TW Painting and Aqua-Therm in Brooten. Suzy also belonged to the American Legion in Longmont, Colorado, where she shared her love for her country and community.
A lover of sports, Suzy was a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Twins, the Minnesota Lynx and Minnesota Gophers Women’s Basketball. Suzy’s love for baseball took her on a remarkable 12-year journey with her partner, “Chuck,” and friend Judy “Pudgy” Nelson, to visit all 30 of the major league baseball team stadiums. Her hobbies were a reflection of her vibrant spirit. Suzy enjoyed softball, fishing, and visiting casinos. She cherished the time spent with family and friends, and her presence at her nieces’ and nephews’ sporting events was a testament to her supportive nature. A cancer survivor for 18 years, Suzy’s resilience was an inspiration to all who knew her. She died surrounded by her family and friends on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at home in Brooten.
Suzanne is survived by her devoted partner of 38 years, Glorianne “Chuck” Whitmore; her brothers, Roger Sagedahl, Sherwood (Carol) Sagedahl, and Robert (Yvonne) Sagedahl; her sister, Eileen Eskelson; sisters-in-law, Karen Sagedahl and Marlene Sagedahl; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who will miss her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Chuck, Larry, and Kenneth Sagedahl; her brother-in-law, Edwin Eskelson; her sister-in-law, Bea Sagedahl; nieces, Leslie Sagedahl and Lita Sagedahl and nephew, Tim Eskelson.
Loyal, witty, and generous, Suzy’s legacy is one of joy, perseverance, and unwavering support for her loved ones.
