'Lucky Stiff' is a comedy-themed musical with plenty of action and plot twists
That was a hit! The opening night for Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa's fall musical performance of "Lucky Stiff was an overwhelming success at Olson Auditorium on Friday, November 15. The cast and crew, which features five seniors, but the majority of the cast and crew are 6th to 9th graders. Out of the 10th and 11th grades at B-B-E, just one student is involved in theater. In spite of the youthful cast, the fall musical's first performance had very few hiccups throughout the two acts. Technical glitches were few, and the cast was able to power through them without letting that affect the pace and flow of each scene.
Act I begins with a chorus of characters providing a musical overview of the odd and exciting plot twists that would come out in the show. One of the characters, a man wearing dark glasses (played by 9th grader Ella Bouwman), is murdered with the firing of a gun. ("Something Funny's Going On")
From there, action ebbs and flows between soothing musical numbers and fast-paced movements of characters across the scene as mayhem ensues.
Two seventh graders, Morgan Theis and Eliana Funes, were outstanding in performing difficult songs, including in the "Rita's Confession" scene in Act I.
The musical has two more shows to perform this weekend: Saturday, November 16 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, November 17 at 2 p.m.
A video attached to this web article features a scene from Act I on opening night. In this scene, the lead character, Harry Witherspoon, is shown on a train to Monte Carlo. B-B-E's middle school grade representation in theater features two 6th graders plus four 7th graders, two 8th graders and two 9th graders. You would never know that 10 cast members are 9th graders or younger. The show was that good!
A summary of the fall musical was published on page one of the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper's October 24 and November 14 issues. It reads as follows:
