Heartbreak in Fargo: Jaguar football suffers tough loss to Patriots (VIDEO)

B-B-E football season ends in Section 4A championship

The game was not for the faint of heart! Not by any means.

Facing No. 5-ranked (Associated Press) and undefeated Upsala/Swanville Area, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa football team battled for 48 minutes of hard-hitting and highly entertaining Section 4A championship action at the FargoDome on Friday, November 1. The Jaguars led 6-0 after the first quarter, but the teams were tied at 6-6 going into halftime.

The Jaguars trailed 12-6 in the fourth quarter before they scored on their 14th possession of the game. This series started on their own 45-yard line with 5:04 left. Later, with 4:46 to go, junior receiver Kameron Hiltner caught a deep pass from Luke Illies to tie it up at 12-12. In a truly valiant effort, Illies attempted to run the 2-point conversion carry after he was flushed from the pocket. The Patriots came up with a big stop and tackled him one yard short of the goal line.

U/SA broke that late 12-12 tie with just 12 seconds to go in the game on a 21-yard touchdown catch by Jack Primus from quarterback Frankie Meagher. After a good PAT kick, the 19-12 score stood through the final horn.

The Patriots improve to 10-0 overall while advancing to the Class 1A state tournament for the first time since 2014. For B-B-E, the Jaguars finish another stellar season on the gridiron with an 8-2 record. They have played in three of the last four section championship games, but a back-to-back appearance at state was not meant to be.

B-B-E's football program has 24 wins throughout its 36-year history since the two former schools paired in August 1988. Of those 24 playoff wins, 9 have come in the last four seasons.
