Elrosa Saints continue to heat up summer (VIDEO)

After Friday's game with Roscoe got rained out (July 5), the Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team made the short trip east to New Munich for a Stearns County League North division battle on Sunday, July 7. A four-run second inning, which featured a solo home run by Derek Wiener, fueled a 7-3 win that secured a regular season sweep over the Silverstreaks.

Earning two hits each were Jackson Peter, Peyton Winter and Gavin Kampsen as the Saints tallied 10 total hits. Will VanBeck started and went eight and one-third innings, with Wyatt Steffensen pitching the final two outs for the save.

The game marked the return of Logan Funk to baseball action this summer after he suffered an injury in early June. Funk, a P.E. teacher and multi-sport coach at Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, is a catcher for the New Munich Silverstreaks.

Elrosa takes over third place alone in the SCL-North standings (5-6) with two games left before playoffs. They host a doubleheader this Friday, July 12. The doubleheader features Roscoe at 6 p.m. and then Meire Grove at 8:30 p.m. to conclude the regular season.

The attached video to this web article features action from the bottom of the fifth inning at New Munich.

The latest SCL North division standings:

1. Spring Hill (8-3)

2. Greenwald (6-5)

3. Elrosa (5-6)

4. New Munich (5-7)

5. Meire Grove (1-11)

In the SCL-South, St. Martin holds a firm grasp on first place with an 11-1 record as they have clinched the No. 1 seed for their upcoming division playoffs. Farming is in second at 7-4, and Richmond is a half game off with a 7-5 record. In fourth is Lake Henry (5-6), and Roscoe rounds out the standings with a 2-9 record.

Last Wednesday in St. Martin, the Martins baseball program hosted Farming for their Fred Schlangen Memorial Foundation game. In addition to earning a 6-1 win over the Flames, they had a tremendous crowd with 650 in paid attendance. They grilled 600 hamburgers, went through 75 cases of beer and shared many memories of the late Fred Schlangen.

Schlangen died on July 3, 2023 at age 64. He was a dairy farmer and father of four who was a big part of the St. Martin community when he passed away. The show of support for Schlangen and the St. Martin baseball program that night is just one example of many that shows how alive and well Stearns County baseball is in 2024.
