The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team kept their playoff hopes alive with a thrilling walk-off 7-6 win in 10 innings against visiting Richmond on Friday night. The game was played across two days, as it began on May 24 but was halted after the third inning due to the weather. It was an incredible game that saw 24 runners stranded by both teams.
In the bottom of the 10th, Will VanBeck led off with a walk, advanced on a two-out intentional walk issued to Jackson Peter and then scored on Derek Wiener's RBI-single off the fence.
Wiener had a hot bat all night and went 5-for-6 with 5 RBI while accounting for half of Elrosa's hits. In the process, he tied the program record with five hits in the Richmond game. This record was first set by Elmer Schneider in 1949 against New Munich. Since then, it has been achieved by three other Saints, all in the 1988 season, by Gregg Haider, Bruce Duevel and Ken Haider.
On Sunday in an afternoon game under what was far and away the most perfect day this summer for a baseball game, the Saints knocked Greenwald out of first place in the Stearns County League North standings with a 6-2 win. The wind was calm, the sunshine was as strong as ever and temperatures hovered around 70 degrees.
Next: the Saints host Roscoe on Saturday, July 6 under the lights. The next day, they resume SCL-North action with a trip to New Munich for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
Now 4-6 in the SCL-North standings and still in fourth place, the Saints are within striking distance of second in the standings, although they'd need help for that climb.
With a 6-1 win against third-place New Munich on Sunday, Spring Hill moves into first place alone (6-3) with a half-game lead over Greenwald (6-4).
Meire Grove is in fifth with a 1-8 mark.
St. Martin holds a small lead in the SCL-South with first place at 9-1, while Richmond holds second at 7-4. Farming is in third with a 5-3 record, and Lake Henry is in fourth at 4-6. Roscoe is in fifth with a 2-8 record.
The regular season's final stretch features these games: Wednesday, July 10 at home against Paynesville; and Friday, July 12 at home against Meire Grove.
The SCL division playoffs begin at the high seeds on Saturday, July 20 with the elimination and region seeding games set for Sunday, July 21. The Region 15C tournament is in Watkins starting on August 2.
