Two years ago, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa girls' basketball team made history by becoming the first girls' squad to play in a state championship game.
On Saturday, March 18 the girls' basketball team made more history for the program by becoming the first girls' squad to finish the season with a win in the Jaguar athletics era. Facing the Class 1A state tournament's No. 2-seeded Hayfield, the No. 5-seeded Jaguars held the lead for the majority of the game at Concordia University-St. Paul Gangelhoff Center while earning a 65-54 win to finish in third place.
We have to go all the way back to 1984 for the last time a girls' squad finished with a win, when the Belgrade Redmen volleyball team finished in third place in the Class 1A state tournament. The 1973-1974 Brooten girls' basketball team also finished with a win after claiming the first-ever District 20 championship by defeating Litchfield 43-39 in the finals. There was no further playoffs that season, however, leaving the Buccaneers with a 9-0 record.
