Jaguars overcome outstanding state quarterfinals effort by Sleepy Eye St. Mary's
For the first time since 2014, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa boys' basketball team is heading to the state championship Final Four round. The Jaguars, 27-4 on the season, defeated No. 3-ranked Sleepy Eye St. Mary's 70-63 in the Class 1A state quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 23 at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. They led 37-34 after a back-and-forth first half played out and trailed 52-47 midway into the second half. A late 13-0 run put the game out of reach for the Knights, who head to the consolation bracket with a 28-3 record.
Next: the Jaguars face another formidable opponent with New Life Academy, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, in the state semifinals on Friday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at Williams Arena. The NLA Eagles of Woodbury are playing in their third state tournament in school history and first since 2004.
B-B-E played in three state tournaments in 2011, 2012 and 2014, and they finished second in 2011 while earning state titles in 2012 and 2014. The 2011-2012 squad finished a perfect 33-0.
