FAQs about getting a COVID vaccine at Glacial Ridge Health

Glacial Ridge Health System (GRHS) is working closely with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Horizon Public Health (Pope County) to distribute COVID-19 vaccinations. The COVID-19 vaccine distribution is happening in phases, and while not as quickly as we would like, those who have the highest risk for severe illness are getting the vaccine first.

Who is eligible?

GRHS is giving vaccines to those in Phase 1A, including those aged 65 or older – especially with high-risk health conditions, and any healthcare workers, those working in long-term care facilities, emergency medical service personnel, and first responders who have not received it yet.

When will more COVID vaccines be available?

Please understand it will take some time to vaccinate everyone who wants it. GRHS and community members who received the vaccine so far are thankful for the doses allocated to the area and remain optimistic. GRHS is proactively notifying patients and community members when additional quantities are available. Eligibility criteria and the steps to take to secure your vaccine will be communicated through the web, on social media, over the radio, and in print.

Patients who received their first shot at GRHS are likely to get their second shot at GRHS – as long as the hospital gets the necessary quantity from the state. In this ever-changing pandemic, flexibility is vital.

Why didn't I get called to schedule an appointment for the vaccine?

The highest risk patients over age 65 were identified through the electronic medical record system. GRHS uses a random selection process to offer the vaccine to eligible patients during this distribution phase. When allocated to GRHS for the community, all doses are in community members' arms within 24 to 72 hours.

What is the process to receive a vaccine?

Currently, GRHS is not scheduling any vaccination appointments ahead of time or keeping a waiting list because of uncertain availability. Upon weekly notification of the number of doses allocated to GRHS from the state and regional coalition, GRHS will offer a vaccine appointment to eligible patients. At this time, GRHS is not keeping a waiting list. They will notify the community when doses are available by appointment.

With the limited supply of vaccines statewide, you may want to try to secure one at an MDH vaccine site located throughout the state. You can check your eligibility and enter the lottery for an appointment at mn.gov/findmyvaccine.
