Section 5A girls' golf meet decided by slim margin

For the second year in a row, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa girls' golf team fell just short of a trip to the Class 1A state golf meet.

At Benson for the Section 5A state-qualifying finals on June 1, the Jaguars went toe-to-toe with Minneota for top honors. It was a barn-burner over the two-day affair, and when the dust settled the Vikings held a two-stroke lead on day one and then beat the Jaguars by one stroke on day two.

Final Section 5A girls' golf playoff standings:

1st) Minneota 722

2nd) B-B-E 725

3rd) Lac qui Parle Valley 752

4th) Ortonville 756

Individually, B-B-E senior Alyssa Dalen advanced to state for the third time of her career and second time as a Jaguar. On the second day of sections, Dalen shot an 86 (169 overall) and had the tournament's second-best score. Sophomore Emily Wosmek advances to state for the first time of her career with a day-two score of 88 (177 overall).

In 2015 at the section finals, the Jaguars shot a 357 to take second place behind BOLD, who shot a 345. The Warriors were the defending state runners-up then, and at the 2015 state meet they shot a 711 (353 & 358) to finish in fourth place. The 2015 Class 1A state champion, Legacy Christian Academy, shot a 679 (346 & 333).

More coverage will be updated on Friday this week.
