A multi-block section on the western side of Brooten lost electricity on Saturday, October 21, after an overhead power line was clipped by farm equipment. At 4:45 p.m., a loud boom was heard in western Brooten when the external auger on a large (500+ bushel) gravity box clipped an overhead power line across Highway 55 between School Street and Western Avenue. While no loss of life has been reported, a two-alarm fire north of Brooten on Sunday, October 15 claimed a rural Brooten home. The fire call went out around 5 p.m., and both the Brooten and Elrosa fire departments responded along with the Glacial Ridge Ambulance service. By 6 p.m., the fire was out but the departments still had plenty of work to do putting out the smoke and any potential flare-ups. The Senior Class of 2018 won Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa's Powder Puff flag football game for Homecoming 2017 on Wednesday afternoon (September 27). The game was played with four, six-minute quarters. The Dave and Clara Rooney family hosted the 37th annual OktoberFest at the Padua Pub on Wednesday, October 4. With a lack of electricity closing school at Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Wednesday, September 20, labor was plentiful throughout the Bonanza Valley and B-B-E areas to assist with the cleanup in the aftermath of a severe wind/rain storm. The Brooten Fire Department Relief Association hog roast and 20-gun raffle is at the Brooten Pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 23. The hog roast with all the fixings (free will donation) starts at 5 p.m. along with games. Belgrade has new young ladies to represent the town over the next year after new royalty was crowned at the Belgrade Royal Ambassador program on Saturday (Aug. 12) of August Fest.
