Rising to the top

B-B-E wrestlers shine at New London-Spicer Invitational

For the second Friday in a row, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars have risen to the top of the crowd at a wrestling invitational. On January 20, the B-B-E Jaguars made the very short trip south down Highway 71 to a nine-team invitational that included Central Minnesota Conference rivals Eden Valley-Watkins and Kimball plus strong programs from Glencoe-Silver Lake, Albany and Hibbing.

Once the semifinals and wrestlebacks were completed, the Jaguars found themselves sitting in first place, but not by a comfortable margin. Here's how the top five shook out heading into the finals: 1.) B-B-E 153.5 points; 2.) Hibbing 144.5 points; 3.) Albany 138 points; 4.) Kimball Area 106.5 points; 5.) St. Cloud Apollo 96 points.

The Jaguars stepped up their game and had a strong run through the finals, collecting key wins against second-place Hibbing while building an 18-point advantage with the upper three weights left to finish. Canon Swanson (113) and Tyler Bents (126) each won individual titles to lead the Jaguars. Also making it to their respective championship matches were Adam Jaeger (145) and Isaiah Gilbert (152), both of whom took second place. Other Jaguars helping pile on the team points were Dylan T. Kampsen (132), Mark Jenniges (138), Trevor Kern (160) and Dalton Guzier (170) all earning third place in their divisions.

Once all the matches were in the book, the Jaguars claimed first place with a 14-point advantage.
